How are special needs defined?

Vision

The learner struggles to read their exercise books, or the board unless they sit close to it.

Communication

The learner struggles to read their exercise books, or the board unless they sit close to it. Using their usual language, others often struggle to understand what the learner is telling them, and/or the learner struggles to understand them.

Hearing

The learner does not respond to others or others have to use a louder voice or go closer to them so they can hear.

Mobility

The learner struggles to move around the school.

Cognition

The learner needs more time for simple tasks, does not remember tasks and/or what they have learnt, and/or cannot concentrate in class.

Self Care

The learner struggles in daily self-care, such as using the bathroom and feeding themselves.

What are Other Common Conditions?

Epilepsy

A neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

Dwarfism

The condition of being of unusually short stature or small size, especially on account of a genetic or medical condition such as achondroplasia.

Albinism

A congenital absence of pigment in the skin and hair (which are white) and the eyes (which are usually pink).
